HSM – Proteomics and Mass Spectrometry Unit, IRCCS Ospedale Policlinico San Martino
The Ospedale Policlinico San Martino (HSM) of Genova, Italy, is the main city Hospital. It is a University Hospital includeing clinical and research units tightly connected to the activity of the University of Genova and/or led by University professors. It has been recognized by the Italian Ministry of Health as “Istituto di Ricovero e Cura a Carattere Scientifico” (Scientific Institute for Research, Hospitalisation and Health Care), which is the highest certification in Italy for Institutes involved in Health Research.
It provides better care and prevention of diseases through basic, translational and clinical research. Fields of research activity include epidemiology, risk factors and primary prevention, cellular, molecular and structural biology, genomics and proteomics, tumour immunology, integrated approaches to cancer therapy.
It has the WIPO International Depositary Authority (IDA) status. It is member of the European Culture Collections’ Organisation (ECCO) and of the World Federation for Culture Collections (WFCC). HSM have coordinated the Italian Network of Culture Collections (CollNet) and participated in the preparatory phase of the Microbial Resource Research Infrastructure (MIRRI). It is now a member of the Joint Research Unit MIRRI-IT, that was created with the aim of constructing the Italian node of MIRRI. Upon this agreement, partners can contribute to the implementation of research projects of common interest and devoted to the aims of MIRRI-IT by joining forces and sharing resources, including man power, under the umbrella of any one of the partners.
The Bioinformatics laboratory, part of the Proteomics and Mass Spectrometry Unit, develops software tools and databases, provides network services and education/training in biocomputing. It is maintaining the Common Access to Biological Resources and Information (CABRI) Network Services, devoted to availability of quality biological resources in Europe. The Bioinformatics laboratory is active in the field of data integration too.
